My Husband Is Jealous Of Our Baby

How exactly do you know your husband is jealous of your baby? It’s like looking for corroborating evidence to support a claim in a court of law. Although each person exhibits different behaviors, there are a good number of signs you should generally see if your husband is jealous of your baby.

They include :

1. Competition

When your husband becomes jealous of the attention and love you give to your baby, it can lead to him feeling like he’s no longer important. In an attempt to prove his worth, he may start competing with the baby for your affection. It’s like trying to outdo the most popular kid in school because you want to be recognized as the best.

This jealousy can manifest in various ways, such as him pointing out that he’s better than the baby at a particular thing or trying to prove that he’s more useful than the baby. However, it’s important to recognize that your baby needs your love and attention, and your husband should not feel threatened by that.

2. Refusal to attend events where your baby will be the center of attention

Your husband may choose to skip events or social gatherings because he feels that your baby will be the center of attention, leaving him feeling ignored and unimportant. You may also experience being overlooked as people only ask about the baby and not about how you are doing.

This is a common complaint among new moms who feel like they are no longer seen as individuals but only as mothers. Your husband, on the other hand, may feel like he is losing his identity and importance in your life.

If your husband is usually outgoing but suddenly becomes withdrawn, it may be a sign that he is struggling with feelings of jealousy towards your baby. It’s important to have an open and honest conversation to understand his perspective and find ways to address his concerns.

3. He retreats into himself

You may observe that your husband no longer spends as much time with you. He is now withdrawn from you and of course, the baby. He is also very quiet – too quiet. Then, it may be that he’s jealous of the baby.

He may be feeling annoyed with you because he feels you’re not giving him enough attention like the baby.

Given this, he may decide to repay you with his treatment of ignorance. He may be in his room all day and wear a long face when he’s out. He may not disclose why this is happening immediately.

4. Gets provoked easily

Jealousy brings out the worst in the best of us. You may observe that your husband flares up easily for no good cause, especially when you talk about the baby. In fact, in one of his outbursts, he may point it out that it is always about the baby

This negative emotional build-up in him may be due to all the stress of a disrupted sleep pattern, overwhelming financial responsibilities, and emotional burdens.

It may cause his emotions to be on an all-time high with you on the receiving end. He’ll just want to rant at every little thing and make a mountain out of a mole hill.

5. Tries to avoid doing things for the baby

With his feelings of jealousy, your husband may try so hard to avoid doing things for the baby. He may utterly refuse to perform tasks relating to the baby or continue to put them off till later. He may tell you he’ll do it but you may have to keep reminding him.

He may be so reluctant to do something for the baby even when it’s a very simple task. This behaviour is rather childish but like I said, jealousy brings out the worst in us.

This is a tough question but it’s worth asking. Don’t go judging if you haven’t understood the reasons for your husband’s jealousy. Well, if you notice that your husband is jealous of your baby, it may be due to one of these factors:

1. You spend less time with him

Spending time with your husband helps you to know more about each other and cultivates fertile soil for a smooth and long-lasting relationship. With the arrival of a baby, your attention is divided.

As a mother, you carried the child for nine months and you feel so connected to him. It’s natural for you to want to spend a lot of time understanding your baby. Even if you don’t, you will have to because babies demand a lot of time and attention.

The only thing babies do is eat and sleep-at least for the first few months they’re in the world. So, spending less time with him may drive him to jealousy.

2. Depression

If you think that it’s only mother’s that can suffer from baby blues or postpartum depression, then you’ve got to correct your line of thinking because dads also go through postpartum depression.

Although research confirms it’s a small percentage of men go through postpartum depression, these dads experience depression associated with the period after the birth of a new child.

Men experience depression differently than women. They do not necessarily show symptoms like being very emotional or crying but you may notice that they’re always tired, alongside changes in appetite.

Whatever the case, this depression can lead to irritability which may cause your husband to feel withdrawn from you and the baby, resulting in jealousy.

3. Narcissism

This is a situation where a person excessively admires themselves, with disregard for the feelings of others.

Sometimes, people may have what we call Narcissistic Personality Disorder, causing them to exhibit this trait strongly. Some other mental health disorders come with narcissism as a symptom.

If your husband is a narcissist, he’ll enjoy receiving a lot of praise and being a priority. The arrival of a baby may not go well with his personality and as a result, he may begin to exhibit traits of jealousy towards his child.

4. Third Party Feelings

It is common for husbands to feel like “third wheels” when their wives have babies. This is because the bond between a mother and child is very strong and may even rival the one between the husband and wife.

Your husband may feel very sad because you don’t do the things you used to before the arrival of your child. He may feel left out because it seems like you give all your affection to only your baby. Feeling like the third wheel in the family, he may start to develop feelings of jealousy.

Is it normal for my husband to be jealous of our baby?

It is normal for your husband to be jealous of your baby, given the circumstances. Don’t forget that your husband is a human being and he is capable of feeling different emotions. Being a man doesn’t make him superhuman. He can also feel left out in situations like this.

Should Your Husband Or Baby Come First?

It’s crucial to recognize that both your husband and baby hold significant places in your life, and you should prioritize them equally.

Neglecting your husband’s needs may lead to resentment and strain in your relationship, which can harm your marriage. On the other hand, overlooking your baby’s needs can result in missing important details about their development and growth.

Being a mom is a challenging role that requires balancing the needs of everyone, including yourself. While your baby may demand most of your time, it’s vital to find ways to spend quality time with your husband and make up for lost time.

With mutual understanding and support, you and your husband can work together to navigate this new phase of your lives and ensure that both your baby and your marriage receive the attention they deserve.

The Jealous Father Syndrome That Makes Husbands Jealous Of Their Babies

The jealous father syndrome is simply founded upon the emotions of a father and husband towards his baby. This syndrome takes another step further. Your husband may get overprotective and jealous of other people becoming close to your baby.

Being protective of your baby is good, but you know it becomes a problem when you start getting jealous of other people’s interactions with your baby.

The jealous father syndrome often manifests itself in this way. The husbands may restrict some people from interacting with the baby and claim it is for the baby’s best.

Signs of the jealous father syndrome include:

  • Overprotectiveness
  • Setting too many rules and regulations
  • Acting suspicious of people around your baby
  • Addressing the show of love to the baby as something sinister

At the end of the day, the father has to understand that as much as he loves the baby, he isn’t to completely take over the baby’s life.

It may be that your husband has a possessive side to him due to some reasons. You may both decide to see a therapist to understand more.

What Can I Do To Prevent My Husband From Being Jealous Of Our Baby?

In order to avoid a situation where your marriage is at stake, there are steps you can take to prevent the incident of jealousy from your husband as regards your baby.

Here are things you can do to prevent your husband from being jealous of your baby:

1. Plan during pregnancy

Planning for the arrival of a baby involves considering the physical, financial, mental, and emotional impact it will have on your life. While the financial costs of raising a child can be significant, the toll it can take on your relationship with your partner may be even greater.

It’s important to recognize that a baby will require a lot of attention and your relationship will inevitably change. You may not have the same amount of time for each other as before, so it’s essential to plan ways to keep your relationship strong.

One effective strategy is to schedule regular date nights to reignite the spark in your relationship. Enlisting the help of family and friends to care for the baby can free up time for you and your partner to spend quality time together. Remember that prioritizing your relationship with your partner is crucial to maintaining a healthy and fulfilling family dynamic.

2. Allocate responsibilities to your husband

Try to make your husband feel involved in the parenting process. Do not allow him to feel left out; make him feel involved in the bonding process. You can decide to put him through the food-making procedure or how to change diapers.

By doing this, he’ll feel more connected to the baby, and his chances of getting jealous would be slimmer.

3. Adequate communication

The key to a smooth and long-lasting relationship is good communication. Organize sessions where both of you pour out your feelings to each other. Be honest with each other about everything – how the care process for your baby is weighing down on you. Voice out your frustrations.

By doing this, both of you will have nothing to hide and you’ll notice if your husband is feeling left out at any point in time. Also, constantly remind your husband that you love him and that you care about him.

In Conclusion

It’s possible for your husband to feel jealous of your baby due to the amount of time you spend with the baby or for other reasons discussed earlier.

However, it’s important to remember that your marriage is the foundation of your family, and you can work through these issues together.

If you find that the situation is becoming unmanageable, seeking professional advice from a counselor or therapist can be beneficial. They can provide guidance and help you navigate through these complex emotions and situations. Remember, communication and understanding are key to maintaining a healthy and happy marriage.
